about

new logic, new mixing, reel tape, new limiters

How could, off beat, esoteric time signatures be more mentally healthy than “good beats”? Why even try creating such a thing?

When ever someone refers to something as having a “good beat”, 99.999% of the time, they are speaking of a 4/4 evenly divided beat structure, with emphasis on 180 degree reversing phase pulsations that follow a 1/3 ratio. This 1/3 inversion pattern, in simple terms, is a rock beat.

Example: Kick on downbeat, kick on downbeat, snare on half beat, replete. All mean & manner of adaptation of this time signature have been used. Including utilizing different instruments, repeating even subdivisions, staggering, alternating reversal or mirroring of said pattern (the most popular application) and many others. In spite of this, the principle stays the same. 3 rhythmic emphases, 1 of which is 180 degrees out of phase in linear time with the 2 previous or pending rhythmic emphases.

1 example of the popular mirroring pattern would be, hit on the downbeat, hit on the downbeat, hit on the half beat, hit on the half beat, hit on the down beat, repeat. This is the rhythm emphases structure for the song "fatty boom boom" by "Die Antwoord". Note worthy, it is not rock but it's roots are what rock stems from. Rock/pop rhythms seem to have originated in Africa & other tribal sources, adapted & locally influenced into the current catalog of variations.

This phenomenon is best characterized by an addictive rhythm that makes people sway, dance, tap, flail, or otherwise succumb to a state liken to animated hypnosis. Most common is bobbing or rocking. Varying from a slight sway to full on thrashing. The repeating, complete phase inversion of the rhythm is what compels people to move to the music. Literally like pushing and pulling on a movable object, back and forth, repeatedly. The object will indeed begin to rock. These are the rhythms of infectious songs that get "stuck" in your head, whether you want them to or not.

To require enlightenment, one must first be unenlightened. The unenlightened will likely not reach enlightenment through methods of complacency to their present state. Trance like states tend not to lend themselves to forms other than complacency.

Bad habits are learned through repetition. Broken by interruption of repetition.

Trance educing music is almost wholly defined by repetition & the use of the 1/3 ratio rock rhythm. The fewer interruptions in the repetition, the more effective the hypnotizing effects.

The difference between a trance & a peace state of mind, can be subtle to the unaware. Liken to pain reduction through numbness verses the reduction of injury. 2 very different things that feel similar. The predictably repetitive rhythm of a machine, verses, the subtly ever different sound of each individual rain drop in a summer’s night shower.

The subconscious decides where the gray areas lay & not. Anyone seeking enlightenment, will naturally gravitate towards the self evident facts of the subconscious. It’s ability to detect & react to even the most subtle of concepts in sound. Concepts that the purely conscious thinker, can not & will not acknowledge as possible. As all mental & emotional issues originate with the subconscious, it is that for which ultimately defines the path to health & enlightenment.

As it seems, the musical tastes of one pursuing enlightenment, will progressively lean towards rhythm that awakens. An off beat. A jarring time signature, that stimulates mental process, instead of lulling it to sleep.

Then it could be said, that, true enlightened peace of mind, is not one of trance induced sleep but one of being ordered & relaxed, while alert & mentally simulated. From the perspective of the hypnotized, this concept is too alien to comprehend. It’s strangely illusive nature, keeping it hidden within plain sight.

There is an interesting correlation between the artificial & the trance inducing. The natural & the awakening. The universe seems to run on varying "off beat" time signatures, as likely a result of it’s infinite, living, fractal nature.

Peace.
