Are fans the real problem?

There’s a lot of disapproval concerning the behavior of large entertainment companies these days. Ironically, there is a wealth of independent artists, musicians and producers who treat their fans like gold. Independent producers who need fan support. Instead of promoting these independents though, fans instead use their time/social connections to endlessly complain about the mainstream’s “mishandling” of intellectual properties. Properties none of the fans own. These “big bad companies” are only a problem because the fans continue to support them instead of the alternatives. Simply talking about a company helps it, because it’s all about exposure. The time taken to complain could be used to promote independent original productions. The money thrown at mainstream companies could instead support independent original productions. Original productions that can’t be taken down by big business copyright claims, because they don’t use intellectual property owned by someone else. What hinders progress is fans prefer complaining about “problems” over fixing them. Problems they refuse to stop supporting. Problems they created. Fans idea of “boycotting the man” is to blindly pirate material on the web abroad. Spillover is quick and inevitably. People pirate everything both mainstream AND independent. This pirate’s mentality really only ends up hurting independent producers who don’t have the billions in cash or armies of lawyers to protect their intellectual property. Big business can afford to take a hit, small business can not.
